A Canadian Astronaut Will Test Carre Technologies' Astroskin on a Mission

Wearables are increasing in popularity here on Earth, but the same concept is about to make the move into orbit thanks to Astroskin. The smart shirt and headband, developed by Quebecois company Carre Technologies, will be sent into space and worn by Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques to both test its efficacy and keep tabs on the spaceman himself.

Carre Technologies' Astroskin system provides detailed information on a host of health conditions. The combination of a shirt and headband can track blood oxygen levels, blood pressure, skin temperature, activity level, heart rate and electrical activity (viz. an ECG,) and breathing rate and volume.

While the above medical data is readily available through wearables on Earth, bringing it into space poses unique challenges. In order to transmit the data, for example, Astroskin requires a module on the ISS.
