Turning Thatched Sculptures

Artist Alex Chinneck Creates Installation that Moves with the Wind

Known for his commitment to making the ordinary not so ordinary, artist Alex Chinneck is back at it again, this time with a thatched outdoor sculpture. Inspired by the thatched roofs of days long gone, it turned them on their heads for a perspective that would befit the world of Wonderland or other such fantastical places other than this one.

Whimsically titled 'Under the thumb to hide from the fingers,' artist Alex Chinneck measures a whopping 17 feet tall that is made all the more impressive because it stands on a thick wind vane-inspired pole. This is appropriate considering that the entire sculpture turns as the wind blows. Weighing 1.5 tonnes, that is no easy feat.

Artist Alex Chinneck's sculpture is currently on display in a lovely garden of a stately home.
