Flying fish are one of the most incredible species on the planet, and the new AquaMAV drone takes inspiration from that animal to engender a unique versatility. The AquaMAV is capable of flying thanks to fixed wings, but it can also dive beneath the waves and swim underwater effectively.
The AquaMAV looks similar to a flying fish in terms of shape, but it was also inspired by another animal: the gannet, a large north Atlantic sea bird. The team behind AquaMAV (which stands for Aquatic Micro Aerial Vehicle) borrowed gannets' diving technique to get a better idea of how to efficiently transition from air to water. Gannets dive underwater in order to catch fish when hunting.
Thanks to its animal inspiration, the AquaMAV drone can both dive and fly with impressive mobility.
