British supermarket chain Sainsbury's has officially become the first international, third-party customer to implement Amazon's 'Just Walk Out' technology -- a cashier-free check-out solution that aims to optimize retail operational efficiencies.
Through Sainsbury’s SmartShop app, shoppers will be able to scan a downloadable QR code at the entrance of select stores, pick their products, and walk out. These shoppers will not need to wait in lines or checkout lanes, as they can simply scan their SmartShop app at the exit, which will immediately charge their connected debit or credit card.
"We are always looking at new ways to make shopping easy and convenient for our customers. We are excited about launching SmartShop Pick & Go, which offers contactless, checkout-free shopping to our customers, and are looking forward to hearing their feedback," said Clo Moriarty, Sainsbury's retail and digital director.
