Local architecture studio Benjamín Murúa Arquitectos completes a new domed top that covers an underground sports center dubbed the ALMA Complex. It stands for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Observatory, which is a research building that studies deep space. This is located in the Atacama desert in Chile and is meant to withstand the harsh climates of its location.
It is along the border of the Andes mountains, which have high winds, dust storms, snow, and more. The domed roof is made from a double membrane built using carbon fiber filaments and PVC materials and due to the slightly clear materials, it protects the interior from elements such as solar radiation. Benjamín Murúa explains that "The temperature remains stable at 16-18 degrees Celsius. The energy consumption is practically zero."
