Facebook has added its AI tool to the OpenStreetMap platform, in order to make it easier for users to add areas that were previously not mapped. The new AI tool will be available to users in a number of locations, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, Tanzania, and lastly Uganda. Facebook intends to roll out the tool globally as time goes on.
The AI tool uses computer vision to analyze satellite imagery. This is able to identify roads and share this information with the OpenStreetMap platform. The tool uses a deep neural network that has a two square feet per pixel resolution, this allows the system to better determine what source it is looking at. Afterwards information from the AI system is sent to the platform, where human verification is required.
