The abstract clay sculptures of Jolan Van der Wiel are something out of a sci-fi movie. Futuristic and violent looking, they are created in a unique way. The clad is riddled with iron components, which allow it to be molded using magnets. By piping his mixture of clay and metal through a nozzle, he is able to layer it as surrounding magnets shape each one into a spiky design.
Making up a collection dubbed Architecture Meets Magnestism, the abstract clay sculptures explores the use of natural forces in art. By addressing such things as magnetism, Van der Wiel notes, "We aren’t using these forces as work tools," he says. "They could be next to a hammer hanging on the wall."
