For her Spring/Summer 2015 collection, Dutch designer Iris van Herpen unveiled 3D-printed garments and accessories made with magnets.
Herpen was inspired after a visit to the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, a Swiss research facility that creates magnetic fields so great, they exceed the earth's by 20,000. Herpin's collection came to life with the help of architect Philip Beesley and artist Jolan van der Wiel, with whom Herpin collaborated previously on a collection of magnetic dresses. Speaking of the collection, which is titled 'Magnetic Motion,' Herpin said, "I find beauty in the continual shaping of chaos, which clearly embodies the primordial power of nature's performance."
The garments were created by shaping materials infused with magnets, ensuring that no two pieces were created identical. The intricacies of the garments were achieved by employing high-level techniques, such as injection-molding and laser cutting.
