12Pixel App Ushers in New Wave Of Phone Art

In the age of touchscreen interfaces, 12Pixel mobile art is taking a step backwards, but also a step forward.

Created by Karl D.D. Willis and Dr. Ivan Poupyrev of the Sony Computer Science Lab, the 12Pixel application allows standard handset users to create multiple images using the keypad of their mobile phones.

The image is "painted" twelve pixels at a time utilizing the phone’s keypad. The application then expands into larger twelve pixel blocks in order to produce more detailed pictures.

Aside from simply drawing pictures, 12Pixel offers the chance to produce the images into crystals for personal accessories. Items such as dog tags, mobile straps, key holders, and even a sticker sheet can be purchased after a simple submission of the design. The custom items are later mailed to the "artist."

Prices range from around $60 for a dog tag to $360 for a full sticker sheet. 12Pixel is a new outlet of creativity for consumers without requiring new technology.
