This Portugal McDonald's ad campaign is simply flipping their ice cream products on their heads to rebrand them as "popsicles." With their slogan, "Summertime is popsicle time," the company cheekily suggests that its consumers now automatically view these products as popsicles.
The print ads are very simple, each featuring a single pop of color in the background, with a cup of ice cream or McFlurry upside-down. With the spoon sticking straight out of the bottom, it resembles a popsicle stick. The top-heavy desserts are nothing different from McDonald's regular ice cream treats -- simply labelled as a different dessert.
In Portugal when people hear "Ice cream," they imagine popsicles, meaning that McDonalds is not a popular ice cream destination. Therefore, a marketing team came up with this McDonald's ad campaign that verges between clever and condescending to engage popsicle lovers with their ice cream treats.
